What is Mangosteen?
Garcinia mangostana, commonly known as the mangosteen, grows abundantly in Southeast Asia and many other areas near the equator. For generations, natives have used the pericarp (rind) as a tea, applied it to the skin, and made salves or balms to increase its use and effectiveness. Health practitioners used it as a remedy for dysentery, skin conditions, infections, inflammation, pain, cancer, and other medical conditions.

The widespread and long-term use of the mangosteen has resulted in scientific studies to better understand its effectiveness. As a result, more than forty xanthones and other phytonutrients have been identified in this amazing fruit, most of which are in the pericarp. These results are beyond the scope of this brochure and are well described in the books Mangosteen: The Gift Your Body Deserves and the X-Factor, by J. Frederic Templeman, M.D., and Xanthones: The Road to Health, by Albert S. Miller, M.D.

In my own practice, according to Dr. Albert Miller, mangosteen juice has made it possible to decrease or eliminate the following:

Selecting a Mangosteen Supplement
When selecting a mangosteen supplement, it is important to remember that rich concentrations of the beneficial xanthones are found in the pericarp. Most mangosteen products contain only an extract from the fruit, therefore omitting most of the phytonutrients. Be certain you choose a product that includes the whole fruit, not simply an extract. These serving suggestions are for a juice made from the entire fruit.

Mangosteen Basics
1. Refrigera†e the juice immediately after opening. Whole fruit mangosteen juice contains no preservatives and should be discarded if left at room temperature longer than 4-6 hours.

2. Shake the product before use.

Topical Mangosteen: Skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, acne, and minor burns may see additional benefits with topical use of mangosteen. This should always be in addition to the regular intake. After boiling the juice down to a pasty consistency, or allowing it to evaporate to this state in a flat container such as a plate, mix thoroughly with an equal amount of quality lotion or cream, such as Eucerin or Lubriderm. Store in an airtight container in a cool place and apply lightly two to three times daily. For better results, as your compounding pharmacist to make this for you, using the base of his/her choice.

Mangosteen Sports Drink: To enhance your energy and endurance, consider adding one ounce of mangosteen juice to bottled water.

Vitamins: Mangosteen juice is a powerful source of xanthones, catechins, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, polysaccharides, and sterols to enhance your health. It does not replace the necessary daily intake of vitamins and minerals.

6. This supplement is best taken with meals, if possible.

Expectations
Results are variable. An average experience is increased energy and improved sleep patterns within the first one to two weeks. Those who have pain may notice an improvement within four weeks, and gradual added improvement for three to six months. People with multiple problems may experience improvement in one condition at a time, as the body chooses the priority in which to heal itself.
